Ebook Writing – Your 10 Item Checklist For Getting Started Writing Your First Ebook

Are you ready to write an ebook, but just aren’t sure where you should start? It can be confusing if this is your first time. If you are motivated and passionate about your topic you will do just fine. Here is a checklist of ten items that you should have ready to go before you start writing your ebook.

  1. Word processing software with spell check and grammar check, if possible. This will be your main tool and best friend while writing your ebook, so make sure you use one that has the appropriate features for what you want to accomplish in your ebook. For most people MS Word or OpenOffice Writer will work perfectly.
  2. A list of your favorite research websites such as Wikipedia.org and Amazon.com. You will use these sites to find both questions that need answers and answers that can provide you even more information to include in your ebook.
  3. A list of three or four competitors to your product so you can determine to how to distinguish yourself from them. You want to make sure your ebook offers something different than what’s already out there so take time to review what your competitors are offering.
  4. A list of two or three stock image sites such as dreamstime.com and istockphoto.com. You will use these to find images for your pages and possibly your ecovers. It’s good to use more than one site so you can have a very good selection.
  5. A list of working titles for your ebook. You may not know your final title until you complete your ebook, but having a few working titles will help you focus your topic better.
  6. A list of the benefits of your ebook. It’s good to keep these in mind while you are writing the ebook to make sure you fit the necessary information in it. These will also help when creating your sales letter.
  7. Contact information for your graphic designer. I suggest you start looking for a graphic designer for your ecover when you start writing your ebook. That way you don’t have to rush when your ebook is done. You can take your time and review a number of portfolios before settling on a designer.
  8. Contact information for a friend who will proofread your ebook, or even a professional proofreader. You can start sending your ebook for editing chapter by chapter if you have an editor lined up from the beginning.
  9. Your selected payment processor. You want to be sure to have reviewed their terms so that your ebook will not be rejected when ready to submit. Understand what they allow as far as topics, content and links in your ebook.
  10. A goal for completion. You want to have a specific day, month, or even season in mind just so you stay on track and not have a perpetual ebook writing project that never ends!
